Green Card Holders traveling abroad must apply for a Reentry Permit before leaving the U.S.
Reentry Permit
Although U.S. law does not require it, a Green Card holder should have the Reentry Permit in his/her possession when leaving the United States. Individuals who leave the country before the Reentry Permit is approved run the risk that the application may be denied. This can lead to difficulty returning to the United States.

Since the reentry application process may take some time to be processed, it is best to apply early.

Residency Requirement
Time spent abroad does not count toward the Green Card holder's residency requirement - a condition of United States citizenship. However, Green Card holders may apply to "Preserve Residence for Naturalization Purposes" before travel abroad.
