R-1 Religious Worker Visa

The R-1 Visa is for religious workers who will be entering the U.S. to live and work for a specific period of time.

Definition of Religious Worker
Religious workers include ministers of religion who are authorized to conduct religious worship and perform those duties usually performed by members of the clergy (such as administering the sacraments.) A religious worker is one who has been called to religious life, evidenced by the demonstration of a lifelong commitment, such as taking vows.

The Term "Religious Worker" Includes:
  • nuns, monks, and ministers
  • liturgical workers
  • religious instructors, cantors, and catechists
  • workers in religious hospitals
  • missionaries
  • religious translators or broadcasters


The Term "Religious Worker" Does Not Include:
  • janitors and maintenance workers
  • clerks
  • fund raisers and solicitors of donations
  • lay preachers

Requirements
  • You must best be a member of a religious denomination which has a bona fide nonprofit religious organization in the U.S.;
  • You must have been a member of the denomination for two years immediately preceding your visa application;
  • Your religious denomination must qualify for tax exempt status;
  • You must be entering the U.S. solely to work in a religious vocation or occupation;
  • You must have resided outside the U.S. for at least one year before your application; and
  • You must intend to depart the U.S. at the end of your R-1 Visa status.

Application Process
  • Religious workers should apply at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate with jurisdiction over their place of permanent residence.
  • An interview is required as part of the visa application process, for applicants from age 14 through 79
  • During the interview, a fingerprint will be quickly taken.


Family Members
R-2 Visas can be obtained for spouse and children accompanying the R-1 Visa holder. They may study but not accept employment in the U.S.

Duration of Stay
R-1 Visa holders may remain in the U.S. for up to five years to pursue their religious calling.
