L-1 Intracompany Transfer Work Visa

An L-1 Visa allows an employee of an international company to relocate to the corporation's U.S. office for a short amount of time.

The U.S. office must be a parent company, child company, or sister company to the foreign company, and the employee must have worked abroad for the company for at least one year before being granted L-1 status.

Types of L1 Visas:

L-1A for Executives and Managers

An executive or manager is defined as one with supervisory responsibility for professional staff. The L-1A Visa is issued for a three year period and may be extended to a maximum of seven years.

L-1B for Workers with Specialized Knowledge

This category covers staff with knowledge of the company's products, services, research, systems, management, or procedures. Staff in this category are issued an L-1B Visa for three years extendible to a maximum of five years.

Blanket L-1 Visas

Blanket L-1 Visas are available to employers who hire large numbers of Intracompany Transferees every year. The application process is simplified; the applicant files a copy of the pre-approved blanket petition, along with supporting documents with the local U.S. consulate or embassy.

Change of Status

The L-1 visa may be used as a stepping stone to the Green Card. L-1 applicants will not be denied a visa based on their intent to immigrate to the United States.
