J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa

If you plan to come to the U.S. to participate in an educational or cultural exchange program, you may be eligible for a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa.

Exchange Visitor Programs
The United States government issues J-1 Visas to individuals who will be participating in an exchange visitor programs. These are programs which are sponsored by schools, businesses, or other types of organizations for the purpose of training international visitors.

Eligibility

You may be eligible for a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa if you are coming to the U.S. as a:

  • student
  • teacher
  • professor
  • scholar
  • trainee
  • research assistant
  • medical graduate (resident or intern)
  • au-pair or nanny
  • summer camp counselor
  • post-graduate student

Exchange visitor programs for young people include summer employment programs and internship programs for university students.

Applicants for a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa must show:
  • That they plan to remain in the U.S. for a temporary, specific, limited period;
  • Evidence of funds to cover expenses in the United States; and
  • Evidence of social and economic ties abroad which will insure their return abroad at the end of the visit.

Interview Requirement
As part of the visa application process, an interview at the embassy consular office is generally required.
