GREEN CARD RENEWAL
If you were issued your Green Card about 10 years ago, you should check the expiration date (on the front of the card) to see if your card needs to be renewed. If your Green Card is expired or about to expire, you should renew it.

Application Process
To replace your card, complete a Form I-90 "Application to Replace a Permanent Resident Card". After you have filed the application, you will be scheduled for an appointment at an Application Support Center (ASC). At that appointment, two things will happen:
- Your photograph will be updated for the new card, and
- Your fingerprints will be taken for a background check.

Green Cards With No Expiration Date
Many green cards issued before 1989 contain no expiration date. In August, 2007 the USCIS published a Proposed Rule that would require the replacement of all Green Cards without expiration dates. The proposed rule would also terminate the validity of any green card without an expiration date. Although the rule has not yet gone into effect, it is strongly recommended that you avoid being "Out of Status" when the rule takes effect.
Other Green Card Issues
You should file for a replacement card if:
- Your Green Card was lost, destroyed, or stolen
- You have recently changed your name due to marriage or any other reason
- Your Green Card contains incorrect information
If You Do Not Renew Your Green Card
If you fail to renew your expiring card, you may have problems in obtaining employment, benefits and re-entry into the United States from abroad.
