Importance of Certificate
Your Certificate of Naturalization is your legal proof of citizenship and residency in the United States. Be very careful how you store your Certificate.
Since you turn in your green card at the naturalization ceremony, your Certificate of Naturalization is all you have to prove your right to live and work in the U.S. It should only be carried and used when you have to legally prove your citizenship (like at the border or when applying for a job).
If the government accidentally destroys or loses your naturalization records your Certificate of Naturalization would be the only proof that you became a U.S. citizen.
Replacement Certificate
You should only apply for a replacement certificate if your current certificate of naturalization is incorrect, lost, mutilated, or destroyed. Certificates of Naturalization can be replaced by filing Form N-565, Application for Replacement Naturalization Citizenship Document.
